My name is Diane and my daughter is Lauri. Lauri has Friedreich's ataxia. This is a horrible disease that causes progressive damage to the nervous system. The disease is progressive so when she was young she could walk with a walker then she used a manual wheel chair and was able to transfer from it to the bed and toilet. As she got older and lost more motor function she became dependent on others for activities of daily living and must use a power wheel chair. Sensory neurons do not connect correctly to the cerebellum causing the spinal cord to thin and loss of myelin sheaths that cover the nerve cells. Over time there is frequent fatigue due to loss of cellular metabolism. Some of the symptoms of Friedreich's ataxia are, muscle weakness and loss of coordination, vision and hearing loss, scoliosis, diabetes, and heart disorders such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, murmurs and atrial fibrillation.
There s a doctor at UCDavis in Sacramento California who was doing clinical trials on the use of Idebenone on patients with this disease. He was Lauri's doctor at the time and even though she did not participate in his research study , he recommended she take 500mg of Idebenone two times a day. This was several years ago and she has been taking it ever since then. We have had great results, such as, more energy do to increased metabolism, strength and coordination as well as balance have increased. The best result we had was that at her last cardio visit the doctor said there was no evidence of cardiomyopathy and her heart was well and functioning normal. She has been seeing a cardiologist her entire life to manage her heart condition so we were floored that we had such a great result.
